The 1987-88 Woodlawn Cardnials enjoyed many successes during the winter campaign. Coached by Mr. Tom Copple, the team took 3rd place at the Breese Mater Dei Holiday Tournament and the Nashville Invitational Tournament while capturing the conference championship for the 6th straight year and the regional title for 2nd year in a row. The Cards ended a 22-6 year with a 65-50 loss to Pinckneyville, the state's number one ranked team.

With a 10-0 conference record, the Cardinals won the Mid-South for the 5th straight year after winning the Quad County Conference in its last year of existence. Since they were defending champions, every team was primed and ready to knock off the Cards. Fortunately, none of them were able to dethrone the champion Cardinals.

The four seniors accomplished many things in their last year. Jason Peterson and Shane Witzel were named to the Breese Mater Dei all-tourney team while Peterson also achieved that status at Nashville. Peterson, Witzel, and John Dale were selected to the All-Conference team. Peterson was also names All-State Honorable Mention, All-Southern Illinois Honorable Mention and first team of SICA (Southern Illinois Coaches Association). Witzel was also name to the SICA team, while John Dale topped the 1000 point plateau for his career. Tyson Garren will forever be remember for sending the Cardinal fans into a frenzy with a game-tying basket in the closing seconds against arch rival Waltonville.
