o       Gov’t agents raid suspected communists

-         resentment towards Germans/communists during WWI

Sacco-Vanzetti-

-         immigrant/anarchists charged with murder

-         convicted on flimsy evidence, maybe just because of the above facts

 

Changing Values-

-         women- short skirts

o       work, don’t need men

o       stay single longer

o       short hair

o       dancing

o       smoking

o       drinking

-         music- Jazz- black influence, loud, fast

-         dancing- fast, risqué

 

Christian Fundamentalists-

-         religious, want more morals, better values, literal interpretation of the Bible

-         against evolution, drinking, new fashions, music

 

today- Muslim fundamentalists are against western influence in their culture, want more Islamic laws) similar but different from above.

 

KKK- hits its peak

-         rise in membership, becomes very political

-         wants to protect the old way of life

 

Conservatives- want slow or no change

Liberals- want rapid change

 

Scopes Trial- TN and other states have laws against the teaching of evolution in schools

-         John Scopes, charged with breaking the law

o       Defended by Clarence Darrow, big shot Chicago lawyer

o       Pros by Wm. Jennings Bryan, preacher, ex Pres candidate

-         Becomes symbol of the clash of conservative country values and fast modern city values

-         Scopes convicted, later overturned

 

Prohibition- Volstead Act, 18th Amendment- illegal to make, sell, distribute alcohol

-         major expansion of federal power, but enforcement mainly left to the states

o       Doctor’s prescription

o       Bootlegging (Smuggling)

o       Speakeasies (illegal bars)

-         Why fails

o       Too many people want to break the law

o       Not enough cops

§         Not funded well enough

o       Violent crime up, turf wars over distribution rights among gangsters

o       KKK helps enforce it (thanks but no thanks)

 

Economy- great, booming, US business make tons of $

-         $ free time trickles down to workers causes rise in entertainment

o       Notre Dame

-         Boxing
